Wānaka Hill Lookout, c. 1900-1930

This historic photograph of Wānaka (then known as Pembroke) likely dates back to the early 1900s based on the level of development visible. Taken from what is now the Wānaka War Memorial hill, it captures one of the town’s most recognisable and picturesque viewpoints.

About the War Memorial Hill

The Wānaka War Memorial stands on the town’s most prominent rise, offering sweeping views over the lake and Roys Bay. Since its unveiling in 1922, it has served as both a place of remembrance and one of Wānaka’s most photographed lookouts.
