TSS Earnslaw, 1912

The TSS Earnslaw has been a defining sight on Lake Wakatipu since first launching in 1912. The steamer carried passengers, livestock and cargo between Queenstown and the surrounding stations. Over 100 years on, the Earnslaw remains in service on Lake Wakatipu, preserving a working piece of Otago’s transport history.

About Lake Wakatipu

At 80 kilometres long, Lake Wakatipu is New Zealand’s third-largest lake and one of its most recognisable natural landmarks. Formed by glacial action during the last Ice Age, its striking S-shape and surrounding mountain ranges have long inspired artists, photographers, and visitors alike.
