Common Thread
Common Thread is one of those rare interiors that’s instantly memorable—full of character, bold design choices, and clever details. I was commissioned to photograph the salon's recently completed fit-out, and it turned out to be one of the most distinctive spaces I’ve had the chance to shoot.
From the dark, moody tones to the dramatic lighting and bespoke textures, every corner of the studio offered something different. The space was beautifully considered, with a mix of raw materials, curved partitions, botanical murals, and perhaps the most unique feature of all - a pendant light made entirely of hair. Slightly eerie, completely unforgettable.
The brief was to create a set of images that captured the personality of the space while providing clean, award-ready documentation for the judging panel. A mix of wide angles and tighter detail shots helped convey the depth of the design and the thought that went into every element.
One of the images from this shoot featuring the main salon floor was later awarded Bronze at the 2020 NZIPP Iris Awards, a welcome bit of recognition for what turned out to be a creatively energising project.
Working on shoots like this is always a highlight—where a space has a real narrative and invites you to respond to it visually. Common Thread isn’t just a salon - it’s an experience, and I’m glad to have played a small role in helping tell its story.
