2024 Exhibition Recap

Otago Daily Times: “Photographer Sampford (Sam) Cathie displays his artwork at the Wheels at Wānaka Private Vehicle Museum in Wānaka at Labour Weekend.” Photo by Mark Price

Over Labour Weekend 2024, I exhibited twelve pieces from my Viewfinder series at the Wheels at Wānaka Museum in collaboration with Aspiring Rotary.

The event formed part of my ongoing effort to blend Otago’s photographic past with its modern landscape - pairing archival imagery with carefully re-photographed counterparts taken from the same vantage points.

The opening evening included a short talk where I shared insights into the project’s direction and some of the unexpected challenges involved - from tracking down precise camera angles to contending with new buildings and trees that now occupy the historic sites.

The response was incredible: together, we raised over $8,000 for local charities, with proceeds going directly toward community projects supported by Aspiring Rotary.

Media Feature

The exhibition was recently featured in the Otago Daily Times under the headline “Photographer mixes old and new.”

“How it is and how it was — all in the same photo,” the article notes, highlighting the patience and precision required to bring these century-spanning scenes to life.

Thank You

A huge thank you to everyone who attended, purchased prints, or helped make the exhibition possible - especially the team at Aspiring Rotary and the Wheels at Wānaka Museum. I’m grateful for the continued support and excited to share what’s next for Viewfinder as it expands across Aotearoa.
