Ponsonby Post & Telegraph Office, 1924 (Limited Edition)

NZ$450.00
Only 9 available

This limited edition print is part of my Retrospection series, combining historic Auckland street scenes with present-day imagery.

The archival photograph at the centre of this piece was taken in 1924 by Henry Winkelmann, showing the iconic Ponsonby Post & Telegraph Office in full operation - complete with trams, telegraph poles, and pedestrians from nearly a century ago. I revisited the same intersection to capture a contemporary view, subtly layering past and present into a single frame.

The image highlights how much has changed - and how much hasn’t - in this part of Auckland. It’s a reflection on the passage of time, framed through architecture and public space.

Printed on museum-grade Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper, this print is part of an edition of only 10.

About Retrospection

Retrospection is a photographic series that reimagines Auckland’s past by layering historic imagery with contemporary photographs taken from the same locations. Drawing on the rich archives of the Auckland Libraries Heritage Collections, the series seeks to contextualise and reframe early 20th-century street scenes in a way that feels both familiar and distant.

The series was exhibited as part of the Auckland Festival of Photography in 2021.

About the Photographer

Sampford Cathie is a Wānaka-based photographer with a focus on landscape, abstract, and fine art photography. His work captures the striking natural and built environments of Otago and beyond, drawing on his experience in commercial photography to create images with a strong sense of atmosphere, minimalism, and precision. Each print reflects his ongoing interest in composition, light, and the quiet character of place.
